LAURA ASHLEY SORRENTO LIGHTING – COMPLETE COLLECTION GUIDE

What Makes the Sorrento Collection Special

The Laura Ashley Blog Sorrento collection brings 1920s Art Deco elegance into modern homes. Each piece features drum-shaped fabric shades with metallic linings that create warm, flattering light. The stepped ceiling roses and wall plates echo the geometric designs found in Manhattan’s iconic skyscrapers from that era.

You’ll find this collection works in both traditional and modern spaces. The clean lines prevent it from feeling too vintage, while the luxe materials keep it from looking stark or cold. This balance makes Sorrento one of the most popular lighting ranges available today.

The collection includes pendant lights, semi-flush ceiling lights, wall sconces, table lamps, and floor lamps. You can mix different pieces from the range to create a cohesive look throughout your home. All fittings share the same design language – those signature drum shades, stepped bases, and curved arms that branch out like a candelabra.

Available Finishes and What They Match

Antique Brass – Warm Traditional Elegance

Antique brass brings warmth to traditional cushions interiors. The slightly aged finish works beautifully with wooden furniture, cream walls, and rich fabric textures. Choose this finish if your home has warm undertones or if you want to soften a contemporary space.

Warm Traditional Elegance

This finish pairs well with warm white paint colors (those with yellow or cream undertones), oak or walnut furniture, and brass door handles or cabinet hardware. It looks especially good against deep wall colors like navy, forest green, or burgundy.

Polished Nickel – Contemporary Shine

Polished nickel gives you a bright, reflective finish that works in modern and transitional spaces. This finish bounces light around the room, making it ideal for darker spaces or rooms with limited natural light.

Match polished nickel with chrome bathroom fixtures, stainless steel appliances, or silver picture frames. It works with cool-toned paint colors (grays, blues, whites with blue undertones) and modern furniture with clean lines.

Satin Nickel – Subtle Modern Sophistication

Satin nickel sits between polished and brushed finishes. It has a soft sheen without the high shine of polished nickel. This finish works in almost any style – traditional, transitional, or modern.

Choose satin nickel if you want flexibility. It doesn’t compete with other metals in the room, so you can mix it with brass cabinet pulls or chrome fixtures without clashing. It works especially well in open-plan spaces where you need one finish to flow through multiple areas.

Brushed Chrome – Sleek Contemporary Style

Brushed chrome brings an industrial-modern edge. The fine brush marks create texture that catches light differently than smooth finishes. This works best in contemporary or industrial-style interiors.

Pair brushed chrome with concrete, exposed brick, metal-framed furniture, or glass tables. It looks great in loft apartments, modern kitchens, or minimalist bedrooms.

Matt Antique Brass – Bold Modern Statement

The newest finish in the collection, matt antique brass combines the warmth of brass with a modern matte texture. This finish brings richness without the shine, making it perfect for contemporary spaces that want warmth.

This finish works with textured fabrics (linen, velvet, wool), natural materials (wood, stone, leather), and earth-toned color schemes. It’s particularly striking against white or light gray walls.

Shade Options and How They Affect Your Room

Ivory Silk-Effect Shades

Ivory shades create the softest, warmest light. The silk-effect fabric diffuses light gently, reducing harsh shadows. The pearlized inner lining reflects light back through the shade, giving you more illumination than you’d expect from a fabric shade.

SORRENTO LIGHTING

Ivory shades work in bedrooms where you want relaxing light, dining rooms where you need flattering illumination for gatherings, or living rooms where you spend evenings. They create a cozy atmosphere without making the room feel dark.

Natural Linen Shades

Natural linen has more texture than the ivory silk-effect. The slubbed fabric (those slight imperfections in the weave) adds character and interest. These shades let slightly more light through than the ivory, creating brighter overall illumination.

Choose natural linen for spaces that need both style and function – kitchens, home offices, or living rooms with high ceilings. The texture adds visual interest when the light is off, and the shade glows beautifully when lit.

Charcoal Grey Shades

Charcoal shades create dramatic, moody lighting. They filter light more than lighter shades, producing a softer, more intimate glow. The silver metallic inner lining prevents the shade from blocking too much light.

Use charcoal shades in spaces where you want atmosphere over bright task lighting – dining rooms, bedrooms, or reading nooks. They work especially well in modern interiors with gray color schemes or industrial elements.

Silver Metallic Shades

Silver shades give you the most contemporary look. These shades reflect more light than fabric options, creating brighter, more energetic illumination. They work like jewelry for your ceiling or walls.

Choose silver for modern spaces, home offices where you need good light, or as accent pieces in otherwise traditional rooms. They’re particularly effective in spaces with lots of glass, mirrors, or metallic finishes.

Blue Velvet Shades

The blue velvet option adds luxury and personality. The rich fabric creates warm, colored light that changes the atmosphere of your room. The soft gold metallic inner lining enhances the warmth.

lighting lamp

Blue velvet works as a statement piece in bedrooms, libraries, or living rooms. It pairs beautifully with jewel-toned color schemes, brass or gold finishes, and traditional or maximalist interiors.

Product Types and Where to Use Them

3-Light Pendant Chandeliers – Dining and Kitchen Tables

Three-light pendants work over dining tables, kitchen islands, or in medium-sized rooms. The 45cm diameter shade fits tables that seat 4-6 people. Hang the pendant so the bottom of the shade sits 75-85cm above your table surface.

The adjustable chain lets you customize the height. In rooms with 2.4m (8-foot) ceilings, you’ll have less chain showing. In rooms with 3m (10-foot) or higher ceilings, you can let the pendant hang lower to create intimacy.

These pendants produce enough light for dining but create the soft, flattering glow you want for meals and conversation. Pair with dimmable LED candle bulbs so you can adjust the mood.

6-Light Pendant Chandeliers – Large Dining Rooms and Living Spaces

Six-light pendants make statements in larger rooms. The 55cm diameter works over tables that seat 8-10 people or as focal points in living rooms with high ceilings. You need at least 3.6 square meters of ceiling space for these to look proportional.

The six bulbs produce significant light output – up to 480W with traditional bulbs or 240W with LED equivalents. This makes them practical for rooms where the pendant is your main light source.

Hang 6-light pendants 80-90cm above dining tables or 2.1-2.4m from the floor in living rooms (measured to the bottom of the shade). In rooms with very high ceilings (3.5m+), you can hang them lower to create intimacy.

3-Light Semi-Flush Ceiling Lights – Low Ceilings and Bedrooms

Semi-flush lights sit close to the ceiling – just 32cm drop from ceiling to shade bottom. This makes them perfect for rooms with 2.4m (8-foot) or lower ceilings, hallways, bedrooms, or anywhere you need to keep overhead clearance.

Despite sitting close to the ceiling, these still create beautiful light. The drum shade diffuses illumination evenly, and the gap between the shade and ceiling lets light escape upward, preventing dark ceiling pools.

Use semi-flush lights as main ceiling lights in bedrooms, hallways, small living rooms, or above landings. They work in rooms where pendant lights would hang too low or feel overwhelming.

2-Light Wall Lights – Flanking Beds, Mirrors, and Artwork

Wall lights create atmosphere and function. The two-arm design with matching drum shades provides balanced illumination perfect for reading in bed, lighting bathrooms, or highlighting artwork.

sofa lamp

Mount wall lights 150-170cm from the floor for general lighting, or 60-75cm above bedside tables for reading. Space them 120-150cm apart when flanking mirrors or artwork.

The arms extend from an Art Deco stepped wall plate. Each light takes one E14 candle bulb, giving you flexibility to choose brightness levels based on room needs.

3-Light Table Lamps – Bedside Tables and Side Tables

Table lamps stand 52cm tall with 32cm diameter shades. This size works on bedside tables, side tables next to sofas, or console tables in hallways. The three bulbs provide enough light for reading without being harsh.

The inline rocker switch on the cord lets you turn the lamp on and off without reaching for the bulb. The stepped Art Deco base (30cm diameter) needs stable surface space, so make sure your table can accommodate it.

These lamps work as pairs on either side of a bed, as single statement pieces on console tables, or grouped with other lighting in living rooms. The drum shade creates a pool of light perfect for tasks or ambient lighting.

3-Light Floor Lamps – Living Room Corners and Reading Nooks

Floor lamps stand 147cm tall (that’s about 4 feet 10 inches) with 47cm diameter shades. They work in living room corners, beside reading chairs, or anywhere you need vertical lighting that doesn’t require ceiling installation.

The three bulbs create substantial light output – enough for reading or crafts. The foot switch on the cord lets you control the lamp without bending down. The stepped base (30cm diameter) provides stability.

Position floor lamps behind sofas for ambient lighting, next to armchairs for reading, or in room corners to fill dark spaces. They work especially well in rental properties where you can’t install ceiling lights.

Complete Size Guide – Matching Lights to Your Room

3-Light Fixtures for Rooms Up to 16 Square Meters

Small to medium rooms (bedrooms, dining rooms seating 4-6, cozy living rooms) work best with 3-light fixtures. A 45cm diameter pendant or semi-flush won’t overwhelm the space.

Ceiling height matters too. In rooms with 2.4m ceilings, choose semi-flush lights. In rooms with 2.7m+ ceilings, you can use pendants. The visual weight of a 3-light fixture balances rooms with single sofas or dining tables under 180cm long.

6-Light Fixtures for Rooms Over 20 Square Meters

Large rooms need the visual presence of 6-light fixtures. The 55cm diameter shade fills the space without looking small or lost. These work in open-plan living/dining areas, formal dining rooms, or primary bedrooms with high ceilings.

You need at least 3m ceiling height for 6-light pendants to look proportional. In rooms with standard 2.4m ceilings, even 6-light fixtures might feel too large – consider using wall lights or floor lamps instead.

Calculating How Many Lights You Need

As a general guide, aim for one E14 bulb (at 5-7W LED) per 1.5-2 square meters of floor space. For example:

  • 12 square meter bedroom = 3-light semi-flush (6-9W total LED power)
  • 20 square meter living room = 6-light pendant PLUS wall lights or floor lamps
  • 15 square meter dining room = 3-light pendant (adequate for dining, may need additional task lighting)

Layer your lighting. Don’t rely on one ceiling fixture alone. Combine pendants with table lamps, floor lamps, or wall lights to create depth and flexibility.

Technical Specifications You Need to Know

Bulb Requirements – E14/SES Candle Bulbs

Every Laura Ashley Sorrento light uses E14 bulbs (also called SES – Small Edison Screw, or candle bulbs). These have a 14mm diameter threaded base, smaller than standard E27 bulbs.

You need candle-shaped bulbs that fit inside the drum shades. Golf ball or standard bulb shapes won’t work because they extend beyond the arms and look awkward.

Maximum wattage: 40W per bulb with traditional incandescent bulbs. With LED bulbs, you can use any wattage (most top out at 5-7W anyway) because they run cooler.

How Many Bulbs and What It Costs to Run

  • 2-light wall sconces = 2 bulbs (10-14W total LED, or 80W incandescent)
  • 3-light fixtures = 3 bulbs (15-21W total LED, or 120W incandescent)
  • 6-light fixtures = 6 bulbs (30-42W total LED, or 240W incandescent)

Running costs (based on UK average £0.24 per kWh, 3 hours daily use):

3-light fixture with LED bulbs (18W total):

  • Daily cost: £0.013
  • Monthly cost: £0.39
  • Annual cost: £4.73

3-light fixture with incandescent bulbs (120W total):

  • Daily cost: £0.086
  • Monthly cost: £2.59
  • Annual cost: £31.10

LED bulbs save you about £26 per year per fixture. They also last 15,000-25,000 hours versus 1,000 hours for incandescent, so you replace them far less often.

Recommended Color Temperature for Best Effect

Choose 2700K (warm white) for bedrooms, living rooms, and dining rooms. This temperature creates the warm, relaxing glow that works best with fabric shades and metallic finishes.

For kitchens or home offices, you can go up to 3000K (soft white). This provides slightly brighter, more energetic light while still maintaining warmth.

collection lamp

Avoid anything above 4000K (cool white or daylight) in Sorrento fixtures. The metallic inner linings work to enhance warm light. Cool white bulbs create harsh, unflattering illumination that clashes with the Art Deco aesthetic.

Dimmable Compatibility

All Sorrento lighting fixtures work with dimmer switches – but you need the right components:

  1. Dimmable LED bulbs – Not all LED bulbs dim smoothly. Look for bulbs specifically marked “dimmable” and check reviews for flickering issues
  2. LED-compatible dimmer switch – Old dimmer switches designed for incandescent bulbs often cause LED bulbs to flicker, buzz, or not dim properly
  3. Load matching – Your dimmer must match your total wattage. For a 3-light fixture with 18W total LED power, you need a dimmer rated for LED loads (often 0-100W)

Some LED bulbs dim down to 10% brightness; others only go to 20-30%. If you want very low light levels, check the bulb specifications before buying.

Electrical Classification – Class 2 Double Insulated

Sorrento lights are Class 2, meaning they’re double insulated and don’t require an earth wire. This makes installation simpler and safer because there’s no risk of electric shock even if the metal parts become live.

You only need to connect two wires: live (brown) and neutral (blue). If your ceiling has an earth wire (green/yellow), cap it off with a connector – you won’t use it.

IP20 Rating – Indoor Use Only

IP20 means these lights have no protection against moisture. Use them only in dry indoor spaces – not in bathrooms near showers or baths, not in covered outdoor areas, and not in kitchens directly above cooktops where steam rises.

For bathrooms, you need lights rated at least IP44 (splash proof). Sorrento lights work fine in bathrooms away from the shower/bath area – above vanities in large bathrooms, or in powder rooms.

Installation Guide – Getting It Right

What Comes in the Box

You get:

  • The light fitting with arms already attached
  • Drum shade(s) assembled
  • Ceiling rose or wall plate
  • Hanging chain (for pendants) – usually 50cm, adjustable
  • All mounting hardware (screws, wall plugs, ceiling fixings)
  • Wiring connectors
  • Installation instructions

Bulbs are NOT included. Buy these separately before installation.

Tools You’ll Need

  • Electrician’s screwdriver (flat and Phillips head)
  • Wire strippers
  • Drill with appropriate bits (masonry bit for brick/concrete, wood bit for timber)
  • Spirit level
  • Pencil
  • Tape measure
  • Step ladder tall enough to work comfortably at ceiling height
  • Voltage tester (to confirm power is off)

Step-by-Step Installation for Pendant Lights

1. Turn off power at the consumer unit (fuse box)

Flip the breaker for your lighting circuit. Test with a voltage tester to confirm power is off – don’t trust the switch alone.

sorrento light

2. Remove your old light fitting

Unscrew the ceiling rose cover. You’ll see two or three wires: brown or red (live), blue or black (neutral), and possibly green/yellow (earth). Unscrew the connectors and remove the old fitting.

3. Mark the ceiling rose position

Hold the Sorrento ceiling rose against the ceiling where you want it. Mark through the screw holes with a pencil. Make sure it’s centered over your table or room.

4. Install the ceiling rose

Drill pilot holes where you marked. If you hit solid timber, use wood screws. If you hit plasterboard without a joist, use plasterboard fixings rated for at least 5kg. Screw the ceiling rose firmly to the ceiling.

5. Wire the connection

Feed your ceiling wires through the ceiling rose hole. Connect:

  • Brown ceiling wire to brown fixture wire (live)
  • Blue ceiling wire to blue fixture wire (neutral)
  • Green/yellow ceiling wire (if present) cap off with a connector – you won’t use it

Tighten the connectors firmly. Push the wires up into the ceiling void.

6. Attach the decorative cover

Screw the decorative ceiling rose cover over the wiring. This should sit flush against the ceiling.

7. Adjust the chain length

Decide how low you want the light to hang. Remove links from the chain if needed – open one link with pliers, remove the excess links, close the link again. Make sure the electrical cable isn’t too tight when the chain is shortened.

8. Attach the light fitting

Hook the light fitting onto the chain. Thread the electrical cable through the chain. Attach the fitting to the chain support using the provided hook or collar.

9. Install the shade

Clip or screw the drum shade onto the fitting (method varies by model – check your instructions). Make sure it sits straight.

10. Install bulbs and test

Screw in E14 candle bulbs. Turn power back on at the consumer unit. Test the light switch.

Height Guidelines

Over dining tables:

  • Hang pendants 75-85cm above the table surface
  • Measure from the table top to the bottom of the shade
  • Shorter distances create more intimate lighting; longer distances spread light wider

In living rooms (not over furniture):

  • Hang pendants 2.1-2.4m from the floor to the bottom of the shade
  • In rooms with 2.4m ceilings, this leaves 0-30cm between ceiling and shade top
  • In rooms with 3m+ ceilings, you can hang lower for intimacy

In hallways:

  • Maintain at least 2m clearance from floor to bottom of shade
  • This prevents tall people from hitting their heads
  • Use semi-flush lights instead if ceiling height is limited

Wall Light Installation Tips

Mount wall lights 150-170cm from floor to the center of the fitting for general room lighting. This height works for most people without lights shining directly in eyes.

For bedside reading lights, mount 60-75cm above the mattress top. This puts light at the right height for reading in bed without glare.

Space pairs of wall lights 120-150cm apart. This creates balanced illumination without dark gaps or overlapping light pools.

laura ashaley sorrento

Make sure the wall can support the weight. Plasterboard walls need wall anchors rated for at least 3kg. Solid brick or timber stud walls can use standard screws.

Common Installation Problems and Fixes

Light flickers:

  • Check bulbs are screwed in fully
  • Verify dimmer switch is LED-compatible
  • Try different brand of LED bulbs (some are more sensitive than others)
  • Check all wire connections are tight

Light doesn’t work at all:

  • Confirm power is on at consumer unit
  • Test bulbs in another fixture to confirm they work
  • Check all wiring connections are correct (brown to brown, blue to blue)
  • Verify the light switch works (test with voltage tester)

Shade sits crooked:

  • Loosen shade attachment screws
  • Adjust shade position until level
  • Tighten screws evenly while checking with spirit level

Chain twists or tangles:

  • Remove light fitting from chain
  • Untwist chain by spinning the whole chain in your hands
  • Straighten electrical cable
  • Reattach fitting

Light hangs too low:

  • Turn off power
  • Remove ceiling rose cover
  • Shorten chain by removing links
  • Make sure electrical cable isn’t stretched tight
  • Replace ceiling rose cover

The Complete Bulb Buying Guide

LED vs Incandescent – What’s Actually Better

LED bulbs cost more upfront (£3-8 per bulb) but save money over time. One LED bulb lasts 15-25 years with average use versus 1 year for incandescent. They use 85% less electricity and stay cool enough to touch even after hours of use.

Incandescent bulbs cost less initially (£1-2 per bulb) and dim more smoothly. They produce warm, flattering light that works beautifully in Sorrento fixtures. The downsides: high running costs, frequent replacement, and fire risk if you exceed wattage limits.

Best choice: Use LED bulbs. The technology has improved dramatically. Modern LED candle bulbs produce warm, flattering light that looks nearly identical to incandescent while saving you money and hassle.

Filament vs Standard LED Bulbs

Filament LED bulbs look like old-fashioned bulbs with visible “filaments” inside clear glass. When the light is off, they look decorative. When lit, they create a warm glow similar to incandescent bulbs.

Choose filament LED bulbs if your shade is sheer enough to see through, or if you sometimes use the fixtures without shades. They cost £4-8 per bulb.

Standard LED bulbs have white or frosted glass with the LED components hidden inside. They’re less attractive to look at but often produce better, more even light. They cost £3-5 per bulb.

For Sorrento fixtures with fabric shades, standard LEDs work fine because you can’t see the bulb. Save the premium filament bulbs for fixtures where bulbs are visible.

Specific Bulb Recommendations

Budget option: Standard LED warm white

  • 5W LED (40W incandescent equivalent)

  • Brands: Philips Ultra Warm Glow, Calex, Noxion

How to Calculate Total Cost for Your Fixture

For a 3-light pendant:

Option 1: Standard LED bulbs

  • 3 bulbs × £4 = £12 initial cost
  • 18W total power
  • £4.73 annual running cost
  • Bulbs last 15 years
  • Total 15-year cost: £12 + (£4.73 × 15) = £82.95

Option 2: Incandescent bulbs

  • 3 bulbs × £1.50 = £4.50 every year
  • 120W total power
  • £31.10 annual running cost
  • Replace bulbs every year
  • Total 15-year cost: (£4.50 × 15) + (£31.10 × 15) = £534

Savings with LED: £451.05 over 15 years per fixture

Multiply this by the number of fixtures you install. If you outfit your whole home with Sorrento lights (say, 4 fixtures), you save £1,804 over 15 years by choosing LED.

Care and Maintenance

Cleaning Metal Finishes

Antique brass and matt finishes:

Turn off power and let bulbs cool completely. Wipe with a soft, dry microfiber cloth weekly to remove dust. Don’t use water or cleaning products – these can damage the finish or leave water marks.

For stuck-on grime, use a barely damp cloth (wring it out thoroughly first). Wipe immediately with a dry cloth. Never spray cleaners directly onto fixtures.

Polished nickel and chrome finishes:

Wipe with a soft, dry cloth for regular cleaning. For fingerprints or smudges, use a cloth slightly dampened with water. Buff dry immediately with a clean cloth to prevent water spots.

For stubborn marks, mix a tiny drop of dish soap in warm water. Dip cloth, wring thoroughly, wipe fixture, rinse cloth and wipe again, then buff dry. Don’t let water sit on the finish.

What to avoid:

Never use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or rough cloths on any finish. These scratch the surface. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners (including glass cleaner), bleach, or acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon). These can discolor or corrode metal finishes.

Caring for Fabric Shades

Regular dusting:

Use a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner on the lowest suction setting. Work from top to bottom in gentle strokes. Do this every 2-3 weeks to prevent dust buildup.

Alternatively, use a clean, dry microfiber cloth to gently wipe the shade. Don’t press hard – fabric shades can dent or misshape.

Spot cleaning:

Mix tiny amount of mild detergent (dish soap works) in cool water. Dip a white cloth in the solution and wring it out thoroughly. Dab (don’t rub) the stained area gently. Blot with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue. Blot with dry cloth.

Let the shade air dry completely before turning the light back on. Wet fabric touching hot bulbs could damage the shade or create a fire hazard.

What NOT to do:

Don’t submerge fabric shades in water. The metallic inner linings and the glue holding shades together can be damaged. Don’t use hot water – it can set stains or damage fabric. Don’t use harsh chemicals or stain removers unless you test on a hidden area first.

Don’t put shades in the washing machine or dishwasher. The agitation and heat will destroy them.

Cleaning Metallic Inner Linings

The metallic linings inside fabric shades don’t usually need cleaning – they’re protected by the outer fabric. If you notice dust inside, use a soft brush or the gentle vacuum attachment.

Don’t touch the metallic surface with wet cloths. Water can cause spots or dulling that show when the light is on.

Bulb Replacement

Turn off power at the wall switch. Let bulbs cool for 10 minutes – even LED bulbs get warm. For pendant lights, you may need to hold the shade steady while unscrewing the bulb so the whole fixture doesn’t spin.

Screw new bulbs in finger-tight only. Over-tightening can crack the bulb base or damage the socket.

If bulbs are difficult to reach (high ceilings, wall lights), consider using long-life LED bulbs rated for 25,000 hours. These could last 20+ years with normal use, minimizing the need to climb ladders.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Shade has dent or misshapen area:

This often happens from pressing too hard during cleaning or from impact. For minor dents in fabric shades:

  • Hold a steam iron 2-3 inches away from the dent (don’t touch the fabric)
  • Let steam penetrate the fabric for 10-15 seconds
  • Gently reshape with your hands while fabric is warm
  • Let cool completely

Light output seems dimmer:

First, check if bulbs need replacing (even LEDs eventually fade). Clean the inside of the shade – dust buildup on the metallic liner reduces light output significantly. Make sure you’re using bright enough bulbs (470+ lumens per bulb for good light).

Bulbs blow frequently:

This usually indicates voltage problems or poor-quality bulbs. Try switching to better-quality bulbs from major brands. If bulbs still blow frequently, you may have voltage surges – consult an electrician about installing a surge protector.

Check you’re not exceeding the maximum wattage (40W per bulb position). Overheating from too-powerful bulbs can cause premature failure.

Chain makes noise:

Metal chain can clink or squeak as it expands and contracts with temperature changes. Apply a tiny amount of silicone spray lubricant to the chain links. Wipe away excess. This stops noise without attracting dust like oil would.

Fixture hangs crooked:

Loosen the ceiling rose, make sure it’s properly centered, tighten screws evenly. Check that your ceiling is level – some ceilings aren’t perfectly flat, which makes lights hang crooked. If the ceiling is uneven, you may need to shim the ceiling rose or adjust how you mount it.

How to Use Sorrento Collection Room by Room

Dining Rooms – Creating the Perfect Atmosphere

A 3-light pendant works over tables up to 180cm long. For larger tables (200cm+), choose the 6-light pendant. Hang the shade 75-85cm above the table surface to create intimate lighting without blocking sightlines.

Pair your pendant with dimmable bulbs. Dim lights low for romantic dinners, bring them up for game nights or homework. The fabric shades soften light beautifully even at full brightness, so it never feels harsh.

Add wall lights on either side of a buffet or sideboard to layer the lighting. This creates depth and prevents the room from having just one bright spot in the center.

Choose antique brass or matt antique brass finishes to enhance warm wood dining tables. Polished nickel or satin nickel work with glass tables or contemporary dining sets.

Living Rooms – Layering Light Properly

Don’t rely on one ceiling light alone. Combine a 6-light pendant or semi-flush ceiling light with table lamps on side tables and a floor lamp beside a reading chair.

Position the pendant in the center of the main seating area, not the center of the whole room if the room is large. This puts light where you actually spend time.

Use wall lights on either side of a fireplace to create symmetry and draw attention to that focal point. Mount them 165cm from the floor so light hits the mantel and the area around it.

Floor lamps work in corners where walls meet, beside armchairs, or behind sofas. They add vertical interest and fill shadows that ceiling lights miss. The Sorrento floor lamp provides enough light for reading while looking like a decorative object when off.

In living rooms with high ceilings (3m+), hang pendants lower (2.1-2.3m from floor) to bring light down to where people actually sit. This creates intimacy in large rooms.

Bedrooms – Relaxing Light for Sleep and Reading

Semi-flush ceiling lights work perfectly in bedrooms, especially those with standard ceiling heights. The 32cm drop leaves plenty of head clearance while providing even ambient light.

Table lamps on bedside tables give you task lighting for reading. The 3-light Sorrento table lamps produce enough light for comfortable reading without being harsh. Position the shade so the bottom edge is level with your shoulder when you’re sitting up in bed.

Use dimmer switches for bedroom lights. Start with bright light when getting dressed, dim down for relaxing before bed. Warm white bulbs (2700K) support better sleep than cooler color temperatures.

Avoid putting lights directly over the bed – lying down and looking up into light is uncomfortable. Place ceiling lights between the foot of the bed and the door instead.

Choose blue velvet shades for a luxurious, cocoon-like feeling. Natural linen or ivory create a lighter, airier atmosphere. Charcoal adds drama but reduces overall light levels.

Hallways – Making Entries Feel Welcome

Semi-flush lights work better than pendants in hallways because people won’t hit their heads. Space multiple semi-flush lights evenly along long hallways – one every 2-3 meters provides even coverage.

In entry halls with high ceilings, a 6-light pendant makes a statement. Hang it 2.1-2.3m from the floor so it’s the first thing guests see when they walk in.

Add wall lights on either side of a console table or mirror. This creates a hotel-like entry that feels welcoming and polished. Mount them 160-170cm from the floor.

Hallways need brighter light than living rooms – people need to see to navigate safely. Use 470+ lumen bulbs in every position.

Kitchens – Task and Ambient Lighting

Sorrento lights work in kitchens but shouldn’t be your only light source. Use a pendant over a breakfast table or dining area within the kitchen. Install task lighting under cabinets for food prep.

In kitchens with islands, a 3-light pendant provides decorative light but won’t be bright enough for detailed cooking tasks. Add recessed lights or track lighting over work surfaces.

Choose satin nickel or polished nickel finishes to coordinate with stainless steel appliances. Natural linen shades work better than dark shades in kitchens – they provide more light for safety.

Remember Sorrento lights are IP20 rated. Don’t install them directly above cooktops or sinks where they’ll be exposed to steam or splashes.

Home Offices – Function Meets Style

A semi-flush ceiling light provides ambient light. Add a desk lamp for task lighting when working on the computer or reading documents.

Don’t install pendants directly over desk areas – you’ll hit your head when standing up or leaning back. Position ceiling lights between the desk and door instead.

Choose cooler color temperature bulbs (3000K) for offices. The slightly whiter light enhances alertness and makes it easier to focus on detailed work.

Wall lights on either side of bookshelves create visual interest and provide gentle illumination for evening reading.

Bathrooms – Vanity and Powder Room Lighting

Sorrento wall lights work beautifully flanking bathroom mirrors. Mount them 160-170cm from the floor, 75-90cm apart. This provides even, shadow-free light for grooming tasks.

Remember these are IP20 rated – don’t use them in the shower area or directly above bathtubs. They’re perfect in powder rooms, or in large bathrooms where you can mount them away from water sources.

Polished nickel and chrome finishes resist humidity better than antique brass. Choose these finishes for bathroom applications.

The soft, diffused light from fabric shades is more flattering than bare bulbs. It reduces harsh shadows under eyes and creates a spa-like atmosphere.

Art Deco Design Principles – Why This Style Works

The 1920s Art Deco Movement

Art Deco emerged in Paris in the 1920s and spread globally through the 1930s. It represented optimism, progress, and luxury after World War I. People wanted to embrace modern materials and manufacturing while maintaining craftsmanship and beauty.

The movement took inspiration from Cubist art (geometric shapes), ancient Egyptian design (stepped forms), and machine-age technology (chrome, streamlined forms). You see all these influences in Laura Ashley Sorrento lights: geometric drum shades, stepped ceiling roses and bases, metallic finishes.

Art Deco lighting used new materials like chrome and nickel instead of traditional brass. Glass shades featured sandblasting and etching. Designs emphasized symmetry, repetition, and verticality – all qualities you’ll find in the Sorrento collection.

Key Art Deco Elements in Sorrento Lights

Stepped forms: The ceiling roses and lamp bases feature stepped circles that echo Art Deco skyscraper architecture. These concentric circles create visual rhythm and draw the eye upward.

Geometric shapes: Drum shades provide the clean circular forms central to Art Deco design. The regularity and symmetry create order and sophistication.

Luxurious materials: Metallic finishes (brass, nickel, chrome) and silk-effect fabrics bring the luxury Art Deco demanded. The pearlized inner linings add unexpected richness visible only when lights are on.

Vertical emphasis: Floor lamps and pendants emphasize height, echoing the skyscrapers being built during the Art Deco period. The hanging chains and straight stems create strong vertical lines.

Symmetry: Every Sorrento design features perfect symmetry. The arms radiate evenly from the center, shades are centered, and paired fixtures create balance in rooms.

Why Art Deco Feels Timeless

Art Deco works in modern homes because it balances ornamentation with simplicity. The designs have enough detail to feel special but aren’t as fussy as Victorian or Baroque styles.

The geometric forms and metallic materials feel modern even a century later. Art Deco predicted and influenced Mid-Century Modern design, so there’s a through-line from the 1920s to contemporary interiors.

The emphasis on quality materials and craftsmanship resonates today when people value items that last. Art Deco objects were made to be treasured, not disposed of.

Mixing Art Deco with Other Styles

With Contemporary Minimalism:

Let Sorrento lights provide the ornamental element while keeping everything else simple. White walls, clean-lined furniture, minimal accessories create a gallery-like setting where the lights become sculptural objects.

Use polished nickel or satin nickel finishes. These feel more modern than antique brass. Choose natural linen or silver shades rather than ivory or velvet.

With Traditional Interiors:

Pair antique brass Sorrento lights with wooden furniture, patterned rugs, and classic color schemes. The Art Deco elements add interest without clashing with traditional pieces.

Choose ivory or natural linen shades to coordinate with cream walls and warm wood tones. Use table lamps and floor lamps to enhance the traditional layered lighting approach.

With Industrial Style:

Brushed chrome Sorrento lights work surprisingly well with exposed brick, concrete, and metal furniture. The streamlined metal elements feel industrial while the fabric shades add necessary softness.

Choose charcoal or natural linen shades. Avoid fussy ivory silk-effect in industrial settings. Let the chrome finishes tie into other metal elements in the room.

With Maximalist/Eclectic Style:

Use blue velvet shades and antique brass finishes. Layer Sorrento lights with other decorative elements, patterned fabrics, and bold colors. The Art Deco symmetry provides structure in otherwise busy spaces.

Mix Sorrento pieces with other decorative lighting, vintage finds, and modern art. The quality and craftsmanship ensure they hold their own among collected pieces.

Comparing Sorrento to Other Laura Ashley Collections

Sorrento vs Harrington

Harrington features glass shades instead of fabric. The clear or frosted glass creates brighter, more sparkly light compared to Sorrento’s soft, diffused glow.

Harrington works better if you need maximum light output or prefer a more glittery, decorative look. Sorrento provides softer, more flattering light better suited to intimate spaces.

Harrington leans more traditional with its glass bell shades. Sorrento’s drum shades feel more contemporary and Art Deco-inspired.

Sorrento vs Ellis

Ellis has a Mid-Century Modern aesthetic with cone-shaped shades and more industrial detailing. It skews more modern than Sorrento.

Ellis provides more directional light because of the cone shades pointing downward. Sorrento’s drum shades diffuse light in all directions for ambient glow.

Choose Ellis for modern, minimalist spaces with clean lines. Choose Sorrento for spaces wanting warmth, traditionalism with contemporary flair, or Art Deco style.

Sorrento vs Bacall

Bacall features fabric shades but in a more traditional lamp shape (slightly tapered) rather than Sorrento’s true drum. Bacall also includes decorative crystal details on some pieces.

Bacall leans more ornate and feminine. Sorrento’s clean geometries feel more masculine and streamlined.

Bacall works in traditional or romantic interiors. Sorrento works in transitional spaces wanting sophistication without excessive decoration.

Special Considerations for Rental Properties

If you rent your home, focus on table lamps and floor lamps from the Sorrento collection. These provide the same style without requiring ceiling installations.

Floor lamps work in corners where you’d want pendant lights but can’t install them. Table lamps on sideboards or console tables create ambient light similar to wall sconces.

When you move, take these portable pieces with you. They’re an investment in your lighting that moves from home to home.

If your landlord allows ceiling light changes, keep the original fixtures. Install Sorrento lights but store the originals safely. Reinstall originals when you move out to get your security deposit back.

Hospitality and Commercial Applications

The Sorrento lighting collection works beautifully in boutique hotels, restaurants, cafes, and professional offices. The “hotel chic” aesthetic creates an upscale atmosphere that makes customers feel valued.

Hotels:

Use 6-light pendants in breakfast rooms or small dining areas. Table lamps on bedside tables create the home-away-from-home feeling. Wall lights flanking bathroom mirrors add luxury.

The consistency across product types lets you use Sorrento throughout a property while varying the specific pieces by room function.

Restaurants:

Pendants over tables create intimate dining experiences. The soft light flatters diners and makes food look appealing. Choose dimmable installations to adjust atmosphere from lunch to dinner service.

Use antique brass finishes in traditional or rustic restaurants. Polished nickel works in modern dining spaces.

Professional Offices:

Sorrento lights elevate waiting rooms, conference rooms, and executive offices. They signal quality and attention to detail.

Choose satin nickel finishes as the most neutral option that works with diverse office furniture. Use 3000K bulbs for the slightly brighter light appropriate to professional settings.

Retail Boutiques:

Sorrento lights add residential warmth to retail spaces, making customers feel comfortable and welcome. They work particularly well in boutique clothing stores, jewelry shops, or home goods stores.

Use multiple pendants in larger retail spaces, spaced evenly. Wall lights can highlight specific merchandise or create focal points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Sorrento lights in bathrooms?

Yes, but not in wet areas. These lights are IP20 rated with no moisture protection. Use them in powder rooms or mount them away from showers and baths in larger bathrooms. Keep them at least 60cm from any water source.

Are replacement shades available if mine gets damaged?

Contact the retailer where you purchased the fixture. Many stockists can order replacement shades, though availability varies. Shades aren’t typically sold separately on websites, so you’ll need to phone or email to ask.

Do I need an electrician to install these lights?

In the UK, you can legally install your own lighting fixtures as long as you’re competent. However, if you’re uncomfortable working with electrical wiring, hire a qualified electrician. The job typically takes 30-60 minutes per fixture.

Can I mix different finishes in the same room?

Generally, stick to one metal finish per room for a cohesive look. Mixing metals (brass with nickel, for example) can work if you’re experienced with interior design, but it’s tricky to get right.

How long is the warranty?

Most retailers offer 1-2 year warranties on Laura Ashley lighting. Check your specific retailer’s policy at purchase. The warranty typically covers manufacturing defects but not damage from improper installation or use.

Are these lights suitable for low ceilings?

Yes, choose the semi-flush ceiling lights for ceilings 2.4m (8 feet) or lower. These sit just 32cm from ceiling to bottom of shade, leaving plenty of headroom.

Can I use smart bulbs in these fixtures?

Yes, as long as the smart bulbs are E14/SES size in candle shape. Popular options include Philips Hue, LIFX, and TP-Link smart bulbs. Most smart bulbs aren’t dimmable via traditional wall dimmers.

Can I return lights after installing them?

Most retailers don’t accept returns on lighting that’s been installed or wired. If you need to return something, keep it in the original packaging, don’t install it, and return within the retailer’s timeframe (usually 14-30 days).
